Toying Around
Elxx | June 30, 2007Since I’m going to have my laptop with me on vacation, it’s helpful to be able to continue working on web design projects when needed. For a while, I have been looking for a convenient way to automatically synchronize files between my laptop and main desktop PC. Having to manually transfer my work is just too annoying. Oh, and a challenge for extra points - the laptop’s running Windows Vista, while the desktop is running XP.
I tried Windows Briefcase, but it was extremely buggy and confusing. Every time I backed out of a Briefcase, Explorer would crash and burn, also turning all the Briefcase files into “orphans.” And it seemed to only work one way.
Turns out Microsoft actually has a solution for me. It’s called SyncToy and it’s a simple yet surprisingly customizable app that handles all this syncing mumbojumbo. The Vista-XP barrier is not an issue either, because I only need to install it on one computer - it just uses the Windows network file sharing stuff. There are several different schemes you can choose from depending on how you want stuff to be transferred. Everything is explained really well and I was able to quickly set up and run a sync. It even allows you to preview what you’re going to do before running it so you can make sure nothing gets annihilated in the process. Cool stuff.
